Fairfax, Virgin look to outsource finance teams

Offshoring plans under consideration at Virgin Australia and Fairfax Media could affect up to 250 finance and accounting jobs within the two companies.

Mohit Sharma, who is the Director of Sydney-based outsourcing advisory firm Mindfields stated that rising costs and the chance of vendors collapsing has made carve outs like the one Virgin is contemplating quite risky. He believes such deals are only sustainable where a corporation has multiple geographical locations with scale of more than 500 full-time equivalents.

CSC seeks to reassure clients following CBA tech bribery scandal

CSC Computer Sciences Corporation executives, led by Australian managing director Seelan Nayagam, have been conducting a charm offensive with local customers and other key corporate partners to stop it losing business from an association with the bribery scandal embroiling Commonwealth Bank of Australia's technology operations.

Mohit Sharma, Director of Mindfields, a niche vendor agnostic advisory firm, said CSC was following the right path by trying to confront any concerns customers may have. "It is a commendable step to proactively brief the existing clients, but it also shows the gravity of the situation," Mr Sharma said.

Influential CIO plots next move

Retiring AMP chief information officer Lee Barnett announced plans to leave the Company in October. She will be replaced by long-standing AMP tech executive Craig Ryman in January. Her tenure will be most remembered for her pivotal role in ensuring AMP ­delivered the promised $150 million integration benefits from the $14.6 billion takeover of AXA Asia Pacific in 2011.

Wespac brings in HR outsourcer

Westpac Banking Corporation has selected BPO giant Genpact to demonstrate its abilities to run human resources and back office services, as a precursor to plans to outsource work in the coming months. Westpac and Genpact declined to comment on the agreement, but sources said the bank was looking to move quickly and jobs would soon be moved offshore.

When asked about the plan, independent outsourcing expert Mohit Sharma of Mindfields said it could prove to be a successful move. “If Westpac go with Genpact it is a rational choice as they have consultative approach towards outsourcing”, Mr. Sharma said. “Other Australian organisations that have outsourced HR processes to pure HR vendors are struggling or not getting value beyond myopic cost arbitrage”.
